Here at Freshwater Coolers we like to celebrate our success by giving something back to those less   fortunate. To this end we have recently been working with a charity called The Poverty Relief Foundation (reg no 1000578) which constructs wells, water pumps and tanks for those in need in rural areas of Tanzania, Africa.

The Foundation’s work is mainly in Kagera, a region in north-western Tanzania. Over the years it has provided 35 wells, six large rainwater tanks for whole communities and over 50 small rainwater tanks which are each shared by 4/5 families. Each well serves up to 2,000 people, and families often move into an area because there is a well providing clean water. An important additional benefit of the wells is that the clean water reduces disease, allowing adults more time to work and children to have less time off school.

A well is a huge benefit to villagers and improves their lives considerably. There are eight people in the average family  and they have to make two visits to the well each day. Many walk several kilometres each way, and it is often the job of the women or children to do this.

Freshwater Coolers is delighted to have provided a well and pump in a village called Igando –and it is apparently a very busy one! Igando is far too small to be seen on this map, but is about 25 kilometres south west of Biharamulo. There was previously no running water, electricity or sanitary facilities, so the local people are now overjoyed to have a well and pump which has greatly improved their quality of life.
